It is a great reason to visit between January and March. Calçots are sweet grilled spring onions from the Valls area, and the calçotada season runs from November to April. The main festival, the Gran Festa de la Calçotada in Valls, is held on the last Sunday of January.

The best part of a calçotada is the ritual. You take a charred calçot, pull off the blackened outer layer, dip it in the almond and hazelnut sauce and lift it high to eat it. Then come grilled meats, sausage and wine, and by tradition the meal ends with cava and cakes.
Wear clothes you do not mind getting messy, since restaurants usually hand out bibs and you eat calçots with your hands. Calçots are only the first course of a calçotada, with grilled meat and sausage to follow, so pace yourself. The IGP Calçot de Valls label certifies calçots grown in the Valls area.
Weekend calçotada lunches in peak season, roughly February and March, usually fill up, so book ahead. The Gran Festa de la Calçotada in Valls draws big crowds on the last Sunday of January. A weekday calçotada is usually calmer.
